On our project, we selected
deconstruction rather than demolition, and worked with the wonderful folks at Chicago's
Reuse People, led by
Ken Ortiz, who "carefully deconstruct the building to salvage as many of the reusable materials as possible, diverting them from local landfills." They then transport materials for affordable resale to their partners at
The Rebuilding Exchange. There are
tax benefits associated with deconstructing rather than demolishing.
